Crab Lane Primary School

Thought for the Week - I try to learn something new each day.

Year 1L 2020

In Year 1L we have had such a busy week! We were kindly given a Christmas tree and decorations for our classroom, so enjoyed writing thank you letters to the people who donated them.

We have been learning about addition and subtraction in maths and learnt how to apply what we know about a number sentence, to make other number sentences (fact families). We also enjoyed Christmas jumper day on Friday and had fun performing the Christmas song we have been learning "Away in a Manger".

Some of us have been developing our fine motor skills by using real nuts and bolts to practice twisting them. This took lots of concentration and determination.

We have been really busy this week in Year 1L. We have been changing the story in Stanley Stick in English. We thought of lots of different things Stanley's stick could be, such as a rocket or a fishing rod!

In maths, we have been learning about ordering numbers. In Science, we have been investigating materials and had to decide on an appropriate material to make a coat that would be suitable for the arctic!

In Project, we ended our unit by showcasing what we have learnt in How are you? in the videos shown below and we are looking forward to starting our new project next week… Stay tuned!

Autumn 2 - Week 3

Last week we learnt about the festival of Diwali. We learnt about why Hindu people celebrate this.

It is known as the festival of light. It is the Hindu New Year and lasts 5 days. We learnt about how families celebrate and the food and traditions they enjoy to mark this special time. Miss Molloy’s friend took some photos of her family celebrating this weekend to show us.

We tried some delicious food such as samosas, pakoras and rice and enjoyed colouring some Rangoli pictures.

Autumn 2 - Week 2

We have had a very busy and fun week in Year 1 this week!

In English, we have been practicing oracy skills to discuss how the story "Lost and Found" might end. In Maths we have been using whole/ part models to support with subtraction. We have learnt about Remembrance Day and Harvest and in the areas, wrote about what we had learnt, independently. In Geography, we have learnt about why addresses and maps are important in finding places.

Autumn 1 - Week 1

During our first week in Year 1, we have all been very busy learning in our classroom.

Here are some pictures of us, learning through play in our continuous provision. We are getting used to the new routines and enjoying getting to know our new teachers and classroom.

Autumn 1 - Week 2

Year 1 have had a busy second week back in school!

In Science, we have been learning all about the body. In project, we have been learning about which foods are healthy and unhealthy and which categories they come under. In English, we have been enjoying reading "Bumble Bear" and thinking about the use of speech bubbles and what the characters might say. Finally, in maths we have been representing numbers in different ways.

We have enjoyed our second week!

Autumn 1 - Week 3

We have had another wonderful week in 1L.

In our third week back, we have been learning about one more/one less in Maths. We have been continuing to learn about Bumble Bear in English and have been thinking about how different exercises help our bodies to stay fit. We have been also embedding the independent skills we have learnt in previous weeks, in the areas in our classroom.

We have had lots of fun and learnt lots.

Autumn 1 - Week 5

In Year 1L we have been doing so much learning we have not had a chance to upload photos!

Over the past few weeks in Maths, we have been learning to count in 2's, 5's and 10's and learning how to compare amounts that are greater and less than each other.

In English we have been doing some drama to act out parts of the story Bumble Bear. We have been using oracy skills, to make sure when we perform our drama, we show good voice pace and volume.

In Science, we have been learning about the sense of smell. We had fun sniffing some nice smells, and some not so nice smells! (Vinegar!!)

In Project, we have been learning about common illnesses and how we can prevent them spreading, and how to look after ourselves if we do get poorly.

We have continued to enjoy learning in our continuous provision, especially our new natural resources where we have had the freedom to decide for ourselves how to use the area. Some of us built with the natural objects and some of us even made musical instruments out of them!!!
We are looking forward to some more learning and fun over the next few weeks!

Autumn 1 - Week 6

We approach the end of our first half term and have done lots of learning the past few weeks.

In English, we have been learning about question marks and have practiced writing them by thinking of questions to ask the Troll from the story, The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

In Maths, we have been learning about Whole/ Part models and learning that we can make a number in lots of different ways.

In Science, we have been learning about the sense of sight and learnt to label the different parts of the eye and in Project we have been learning about common illnesses and how to prevent them spreading. We have practiced our skills independently in the environment by completing our challenges.

Autumn 1 - Week 7

We have had so much fun learning all about Bonfire Night. We learnt about why we mark this day, the foods we eat to celebrate and also, very importantly, how to stay safe on the day.

We tried Bonfire food, such as parkin cake, treacle and gingerbread and made some firework pictures. We also wrote some tips on how to keep safe while enjoying Bonfires and fireworks.
