LGBT+ History Day 2021

The focus this year is 'body, mind and spirit'.

Year 4 did some fact files on influential LGBTQ people (e.g. Jan Morris, an established historian and writer), and then we watched the poet Dean Atta's poem on a 'Black Flamingo', talking about how he uses similes and metaphors to think about his own experiences as both a black person and a member of the LGBTQ community, and used this to inspire our own poems using animals as a metaphor.

Year 6 children participated in a live lesson looking at the work of Alan Turing and his work in cracking the Enigma code. We explored the essential role Turing played during WW2, cracking coded messages from Germany. We know that Turing was arrested for being gay and we were shocked that this was illegal in the 1950s. Turing's work is estimated to have shortened WW2 by a number of years and we are pleased that he is now recognised for the influential role he played during the war. In support of Turing's work, we made our very own code breakers to send and receive coded messages.
