'Where we belong, aspire and succeed'

Reading for Pleasure

We want every child to develop a love of books and reading. Here are some of the ways we foster a love of reading...

Storytime

We believe all children, from Nursery to Year 6, benefit from hearing excellent books read aloud well.
Children have access to high-quality texts for daily storytime, which enables children to access texts they cannot yet read independently, as well as promoting reading
for pleasure and developing the love of reading.

Reading in free time

We have developed an Outdoor Reading Shed where the children can
choose to spend their lunchtimes independently reading for pleasure. We also open our school library for children to enjoy!

Teachers as Influencers

Staff promote texts to children in their classrooms.

Here is Miss Duignan's recommendation from one of our recent newsletters:

Miss Duignan recommends Oliver and The Seawigs by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre. This is the story of a little boy called Oliver whose parents are explorers. One day they go missing! Oliver sets out to find them and discovers the Rambling Isles and their Seawigs. Seawigs are wigs made up of things you find in the sea. It sounds crazy and it is! There are lots of laugh out loud moments and funny characters, I always like to laugh when I'm reading. It can give you a really good escape! It's also really inspiring as Oliver stands up to some really large bullies. I really enjoyed the illustrations too, they helped bring the story to life even more.

I hope you enjoy it!

Book areas

Teachers select, display and promote books within their classrooms. Classes 'refresh’ displays to ‘highlight topics, titles or authors.’ We refresh the book stock regularly by introducing different books.

School Librarians

We have KS2 Librarians, who support with running the library and reading shed. They promote reading and support children in choosing books.

Peer Influencers

Children recommend books to their peers. We have a 'Peer Influencer' section on our Bookworms newsletter for children to discuss their favourite books.

Children also share books they have enjoyed in their classrooms.
